In 2018, TVF brought alive the magic of the 90s with Yeh Meri Family. And now, five years later, the show is set to return with its second season with an all new cast. Starring Rajesh Kumar and Juhi Parmar in the lead role, the new season will take audiences back to the winter of 1994. As per Juhi, the show will be a tutorial for GenZ, who want to know what life was like in the 90s. She also revealed why she chose Yeh Meri Family as her digital debut project.
Actors across mediums have been jumping on the OTT bandwagon for the last three years. However, Juhi chose to stay away. She shared that given the kind of content being made, she wasn’t keen. “It was an important thought. I do work, which I can watch with my family, my parents, and now even with my kid. I don’t want to tell them that ‘yeh mat dekhna, ya yeh scene nikal dena (don’t watch it or skip that scene)’. I want to be happy and proud of the work that I do. I have no judgment for people who can do bold scenes but it’s not for me. I really believe that I have so much to offer as an actor, without the support of being too bold, or what many are comfortable doing now. So yes, it has been a conscious decision not just to pick a character but also not to be part of shows like that. I have been offered numerous projects but I have said no to every one of them. When this came my way, there was no scope to say no. Even moving ahead, I would only do projects that I can watch with my own people,” Juhi shared with indianexpress.com.
The first season of Yeh Meri Family featured Akarsh Khurana and Mona Singh. Given the show was much loved, we wondered if she is ready for comparisons that are bound to happen once their series drops. The Kumkum actor replied, “I do have a request for audiences that don’t watch our show with the lens of comparisons. They are both very different projects, telling different stories of two different families. If it was the same, what was the point of making another season? Also, it’s not a sequel, it’s a completely different take. There are so many families out there, so it’s time to meet a new one. With all due respect, the first season is special for all of us. That set the ball rolling but this is a completely new story. I am confident that the audience will like our show. All I can request is for them to meet this family with no preconceived notions.”
On a final note, we asked Juhi Parmar what are the three things from the 90s that she misses in life currently. “I miss my childhood, the adolescent age. Then, I think my parents’ youth. They were young then just like Sanjay and Neerja (Rajesh and her character in the show). And finally the ease to see fearless dreams. Now, we are too calculated about what to do or don’t. But back then, we would have the most interesting aspirations, and also the confidence that it will come true,” the Bigg Boss 5 winner shared.
Starting May 19, Yeh Meri Family will be streaming on Amazon MiniTV.
