Karan Mehra, renowned for his portrayal of Naitik Singhania in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai (YRKKH), has marked his return to Hindi television after an absence of almost four years with the show Mehndi Wala Ghar.
In a conversation with one of the leading portals, Karan Mehra discusses his enthusiasm for exploring OTT platforms, insights into his comeback show, his character Manoj, and various aspects.
Reflecting on his break from the small screen, the actor, who was last glimpsed in a cameo role in Shubharambh before delving into Punjabi television and music videos, elucidates that apart from exploring Punjabi shows and music videos, he was also eager to venture into OTT platforms and films.
He was resolute about returning to Hindi television with a substantial project that aligned with his preferences. Mehndi Wala Ghar appeared to be the perfect opportunity for his comeback. Interestingly, akin to his casting in YRKKH, which occurred unexpectedly, this show also materialized overnight.
Another parallel between these two shows is including an ensemble cast, much like Yeh Rishta. However, Karan remains undeterred by these factors, stating that he typically plays the quintessential hero in music videos. He has chosen to be associated with mainstream projects and won’t consider any cameo roles.
In his comeback show, he portrays the central character, Manoj, and the story revolves around him. While there is a younger lead couple, he is the catalyst for everything unfolding in the family. Given the resemblance to YRKKH’s setup, it feels like a second innings for him.
He has always been secure as an actor and never adopted a star-like attitude just because he played the male lead in a show. He doesn’t carry any baggage. He firmly believes a show’s success results from a team effort. In the current television scenario, where shows wrap up within a few months, he feels fortunate to be part of such a significant show that relies on his performance once again.
This rarely happens, as usually, actors are remembered for one big show, and that’s it. Even after seven years since leaving YRKKH, people still recognize him as Naitik. While he feels the weight of a popular character, he is positive about creating another milestone by connecting with the audience as Manoj. When asked if he missed being on the set of a Hindi show, a platform where he wrote his first success story, Karan replies that he was always content doing TV and was associated with it for the longest time, precisely eight years.
By the end of it, fatigue set in, and it took a toll on his health. So, he felt the need to take a step back. He didn’t want to run around and work 30 days a month because, after a point, he felt the need to take it easy. That’s one reason he agreed to participate in this show. He is only required to shoot 15 to 20 days a month, allowing him time for his other projects.
