Nassar says South film industry thought OTT was new type of TV serial: ‘There was lot of confusion’

South star Nassar recently played the lead role in SonyLIV’s The Jengaburu Curse, which has been winning accolades. For the actor, the show is not just an Indian but a ‘global’ series as it discusses issues that pertain to every individual. “Every country has its own economic, political, and religious problems but the degradation of the environment is a common threat for all,” he shared.

Speaking to indianexpress.com, Nassar explained that as the title of the show carries the word ‘curse’, it’s something that one can give to others. However, when it comes to the situation around us, humans have brought the curse on themselves. “You can see how floods are happening, and it’s so hot. Earlier, we used to wait for rain, but now we don’t want it. When you are in a comfortable situation, you call it a blessing from God and when it’s not, we say it’s a curse. But we must understand that this has been brought on us by ourselves and not God.”

Talking further about the show, the veteran actor said that it’s not a docu-drama or ‘preachy’ and can also be considered a father-daughter drama. “But the structure is like a James Bond film with a number of thrills,” he added.

Given Nassar has been part of films across industries, he shared that when one tells stories from their own region, it becomes more authentic. The actor shared that director Nila Madhab Panda is from Orissa, and he was comfortable working there and telling a more real story. “I really appreciate this kind of story-telling. I think more shows and movies should come from somewhere deep in Karnataka, Bengal, or even Bihar. It would be interesting to see their world. Also, a guy from the South like me, on this journey, realised how wonderful Orissa is. Everyone calls Kerala God’s own country but the state is as beautiful as Kerala.”

While many actors from the southern industry have been experimenting with OTT shows, there hasn’t been a lot of content being produced from the region. When asked about the same, Nassar said that creators there have now started to mentally accept this new form. “There was lot of confusion regarding the new medium. First, most people assumed that it was like making TV serials. Then, when they saw the kind of content being made, they thought it was like a lengthy film. Now, we know it’s not even that but it is a different medium altogether. You have to shape it yourself as per your own artistic vision. Now, you will see a lot of content being made in the South film industry. I have also done a web show recently, which will be announced soon.”
