Guns & Gulaabs directors Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK consider themselves to be ‘lucky’ to have worked with Satish Kaushik on the show. He played the role of a gangster named Ganchi in the crime comedy, which debuted on Netflix on Friday. Kaushik passed away in March this year due to a heart attack. He was 66.
Talking about working with Kaushik, the filmmaker duo told indianexpress.com, “We were lucky that we got to work with him and listen to all the stories that he had to say. Off shoot, we had a greater time with him.”
DK remembered enjoying Kaushik’s stories about the mid-90s. The late actor-director worked on films such as Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja at the time. Raj remembered sharing directorial notes with him since, besides being an actor, Kaushik was also a director who made films such as Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain, Tere Naam, Milenge Milenge and Kaagaz, among others.
“We had such a good time talking to him. He was such a sweetheart. He was a director, so he was always observing and asking questions. I loved the fact that he was always eager to learn by just interacting with the other director. So, there was always those directorial notes exchange. I also always asked him, ‘How did you shoot those things?’ and compare our notes,” Raj recalled.
It was also difficult for the director duo to make Satish Kaushik use cuss words in Guns & Gulaabs. Clling him a “loveable person,” Raj shared, “He was such a loveable person that it was tough for us to make him cuss so much. Cussing was supposed to be funny.”
Guns & Gulaabs is a comedy crime thriller that features over-the-top characters in Raj & DK’s trademark quirky setting. The show pays homage to Bollywood’s past. It follows the story of a lovestruck mechanic Paana Tipu (Rajkummar Rao), a reluctant heir to a ruling gang (Adarsh Gourav), an honest officer-turned-agent-of-chaos (Dulquer Salmaan), and a menacing killer 4-cut Atmaram (Gulshan Devaiah).
