Zee TV’s recently launched show, Kaise Mujhe Tum Mil Gaye, is fast catching on, showcasing an impossible love story between two contrasting characters – an optimistic Maharashtrian mulgi of modest means who believes in working on one’s marriage after finding a suitable partner – Amruta (played by Sriti Jha) and a worldy-wise, Delhi-based Punjabi Munda Virat (Arjit Taneja) who has lost faith in the sanctity of the institution, taking most women to be gold-diggers. Popular actress Sriti Jha, who plays Amruta, enjoys playing a character with substance and having a voice of her own.
Sriti believes Amruta’s character is very relatable as she is today’s girl who is ambitious yet rooted. For instance, we have seen Amruta fearlessly take a bold stand for her mother and speak up about how a homemaker is no less than a partner who supports the family financially. On seeing how her father is deserting her mother for another woman, she calls him out on his actions and drops his name and takes up her mother’s name as her middle name. In the upcoming episodes, Amruta will be seen questioning the archaic mindset that puts undue societal pressure on women to get married by a certain age, while men are rarely, if ever, questioned about their age! All of this points to how writers on TV have begun crafting strong female characters with a backbone and assertiveness rather than the demure, sel- sacrificing and pain-enduring stereotype TV has often been associated with.
Sriti feels truly privileged and grateful to be playing a role that asks the right questions which makes people in turn introspect and rethink age-old stereotypes. Sriti says, “It feels great to be a part of a show like Kaise Mujhe Tum Mil Gaye that is truly depicting Amruta as today’s girl. She has a mind of her own and doesn’t shy away from asserting her opinions. It’s an absolute joy to play a character that stands up for herself.”
With Sriti feeling truly blessed to be playing character with a spine, it will be interesting for the viewers to see what will happen next once Amruta learns about Virat’s divorce? What will be her reaction? Will her perception about Virat change after this surprising discovery? Is this the beginning of a new friendship?
