The Railway Men teaser: Netflix series to shed light on local saviours during 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy

Considered the world’s worst industrial disaster ever, the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy still sends shivers down the spines of those who were in the city at the time. The incident was triggered by the leakage of harmful Methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas from a Union Carbide pesticide plant in the city, and killed over 2,000 people and affected more than 6,00,000 workers and nearby inhabitants.

Set against the backdrop of this tragedy, the upcoming Netflix miniseries The Railway Men will shed light on the heroes who helped thousands of residents flee the city via railway to safer locations. Ahead of the release of the series on November 18, Netflix has released an 83-second teaser of The Railway Men, offering glimpses of the unchronicled efforts undertaken by a few officials to rescue those in distress.

Without opening with the usual peaceful scenes of the past, The Railway Men’s teaser begins by showcasing the Union Carbide plant after the leak has already happened. Accompanied by an intense background soundtrack, it depicts the factory workers as they witness the events unfolding on the ill-fated night of December 2, 1984. “There’s been an accident. A big one. The city is choking,” one of the character’s voices can be heard in the background, as we are shown the residents struggling for breath and collapsing on the streets.

Meanwhile, a police constable (Divyendu Sharma) also joins their efforts. However, as each minute passes, the situation becomes increasingly dreadful, with various obstacles arising in their path. Will they succeed in their mission?

Helmed by debutant Shiv Rawail and penned by Aayush Gupta, The Railway Men comprises four gripping episodes. Bankrolled by Yash Raj Films’ digital arm YRF Entertainment, the show is dubbed as a “thrilling account of courage and a salute to humanity”.
